Tenor saxist Troy Roberts teams up with long time associate Tim Jago on guitar along with fellow quartet members Karl Florisson/b and Ben Vanderwal/dr for some vintage bopping originals. The two deliver a clever duet intro to “Halfway House IN C Major” before Florisson saunters in for a lyrical closing, while the bassist opens things up for the bluesy “Evil Eye”. The team shows its bop chops as they bookend the album with the torrid steeple chase of “Chythm Ranges” and “Overlook” with the sax and guitar running neck and neck together at the finish line. The two also produce some gloriously agonizing moments guided by Vanderwal’s brushes on “Pho Twenny” and create cool atmosphere’s on the lithe “A New Porpose”. Classy strings and brass.
