Brazilian legend Joao Donato takes part in the “JAZZ IS DEAD” series with urban sounding producers and dj Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammed. As with the other releases, a jazz artist is puree’d through modern urban sounds, mixing vintage pulses with the 21st Century inner city. You get some funky drum beats, deeply dug electric bass lines and 70s soul sounds on pieces like “Nao Negue Seu Coracao” with some psychedelic rock sounds begging for a movie on “Forever More”. Vintage Brazilian samba pulses are cheerful with flute on “laisons” and “Aquarius (Bring Her Back Home)” and synth layers like vintage Weather Report get romantic on “Vermelho Quente” and “Conexao”. Fusion for the current millennium.
