BUT CAN HE PLAY THE GOY’S HARP?…Mark Rubin-Jew of Oklahoma: The Triumph of Assimilation

I guess you might call this genre “Jewgrass”, as member of the Tribe Mark Rubin uses lyrics, sounds and attitude from his Jewish heritage to meld into traditional folk and country tunes to create a clever meld of Gentile/Jewish brotherhood. Rubin plays (deep breath) guitar, banjo, string and electric bass, mandolin, tuba, banjo guitar and percussion while he sings with cantoral passion along with guests Danny Barnes/ban, Dylan Blacthonre/acc, Mark Hays/dr and various cameos.

He rocks hard as he sings imprecatory songs on “A Day of Revenge” and on angry banjo’d “It’s Burning”. He throws in a “Y’all for the folk tales on “Down South Kosher” and a harrowing “Murder of Leo Frank” while mixing in traditional klezmer tones with some impressive picking on “Yiddish Banjo Tunes” and the bluegrassy “My Resting Place”. Things are festive on “Good Shabbes” while the menorah gets lit on “Spin The Dreidel”. “Oy” klahoma, indeed!
