Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas: Other Worlds

They’ve teamed up before, but there’s a different feel between tenorist Joe Lovano and trumpeter Dave Douglas this time around. Maybe it’s hinted at on the inside drawing, with Lovano being painted as Coleman Hawkins; Lovano’s got the classic gruff bop sound here with the team of Joey Baron/dr, Linda May Han Oh/b and  Lawrence Fields. Lovano feels at home on the easy bopper “The Flight”  and resigned with Baron’s brushes on “Sky Miles” while the two horns give snazzy dots and dashes to the swinging “Space Exploration”. Douglas and Lovano huff and puff on the elliptical and assertively dark “Antiquity to Outer Space” and Douglas with a mute  is melancholy and blue for “The Transcendentalists”. Baron clippety clops to “Life On Earth” and Oh throbs on the gentle harmonies of “Manitou”. Stars on a trek.
