Just when you think the future of music has gone to the Philistines, along comes a guy like Rahsaan Barber, who plays alto, baritone and tenor sax as well as alto and tenor simultaneously a la Roland Kirk. He’s supported by a swinging team of Matt Endahl/p, Jack Aylor/b and Derrek Phillips/dr as well as guests Roland Barber/tb and Nathan Warner/tp for some larger ensembles, and the whole two discs bop with delight. His alto sax has a gospel feel on “Down In My Soul” and his tenor is supple on “Swang That Thang” an dthe upbeat “Quarantine Queens”. The saxes are as velvety as Ellington’s section on “Breonna Taylor” and the team goes 6/8 delightfully on “The Pink Piranna”. Aylor gets some space on “Just Jack”, Phillips snaps on “#NewDay Rocks” and everyone relaxes on the cool climb of “The Mountains and the Clouds”, bopping on the energetic “Panic Point” and getting you to church on time for “Sunday Service”. I wanna see this guy!
