TEMUJIN TALES…Dennis Rea: Giant Steppes

Music inspired by the Mongolian Empire created by Genghis Khan (aka “Temujin”) is created on this clever and sweeping album of just four songs, ranging from 8 to 16+ minutes. The leader, Dennis Rea, plays various guitars, mixing and matching with Don Berman/dr, Greg Campbell/Frh, Dick Valentine/sax, Greg Kelley/tp, Wadim Dicke/b and various other cameo guests. The lilting “Live at Gaochang” has Valentine’s sopranino swirling in a driving dance, while the earthy vocals of Juliana and PAVA’ mix a traditional Russian beat via a hurdy gurdy to rich guitar voicings. Throaty male voicings akin to traditional Tibetan Monks rock out to some Deep Purple guitar, beats and harmonies on “Wind of The World’s Nest” with a nod to Emerson, Lake and Palmer teams with exotic horns, percussion and keyboards on “The Fellowship of Tsering”. More flavors than a Mongolian BBQ!
