****RINGER OF THE WEEK****DARE TO BE “LIVE”…Jim Snidero: Live at the Deer Head Inn

Tired of staying holed up in the studio or producing those lame “streaming” concerts, alto saxist Jim Snidero finally burst out and boldly decided to do an actual concert. Yes, there was social distancing, but the crowd and musicians were both glad to be out in the world. Leader Snidero sticks to jazz comfort food with his team of Orrin Evans/p, Peter Washington/b and Joe Farnsworth/dr, and Snidero is in lyrical form throughout. The team bops till they drop on “Now’s The Time”, lyrical on “Who Can I Turn To” with Farnsworth and Washington sizzling on a deeply grooved “Yesterdays”. Evans delivers a poetic solo intro to “My Old Flame” and Farnsworth’s brushes are suave on the happy “Bye Bye Blackbird” while the team turns into a blue period for a soft and misty “Idle Moments”. Every note is cherished and appreciated. The most welcome gig of the year.
