Cameron Graves: Seven

Pianist/composer Cameron Graves rocks and swings hard on this fusiony album with Mike Mitchell/dr, Colin Cook/g, Max Gerl/b and cameo guest saxist Kamasi Washington. Drummer Mitchell took his Mahavishnu-Billy Cobham vitamins for this recording, as he is in overdrive with Cook on the King Crimson-complex “Master Spirits” and intricately wild “Red” with the leader. Hints of the band Genesis are heard with some stomping sticks, electric bass and sharp curves on “The Life Carriers”, while Graves gives a Corea-kinetic return to forever as he relentlessly hits hard on “Sons of Creation”. Washington is upbeat on the driving “Paradise Trinity” and dramatic “Seven” with Graves supplying a classy piano intro and further showing his prowess on the evocative solo outing on “Fairy Tales”. None of the songs are over 5 minutes; they say their piece and move on, as well as when Graves sings over the avalanche of “Eternal Paradise”. The fuse of fusion is lit!
