The formidable duo of Eddie Daniels and Roger Kellaway return with a brand new twist as they celebrate the music of Duke Ellington at a concert in Santa Fe from 2012. Daniels performs mostly on the clarinet here, and he delivers intriguing and stellar readings of “I’m Beginning to See the Light” and “Creole Love Calle” in tandem with Kellaway’s magisterial piano musings. Cellist James Holland joins in for a few tunes and adds a warm chamber feel on a moody and wistful “Perdido” as well as a dreamy “Mood Indigo.” On tenor, Daniels melds with the ivories and cello on a rich “In A Mellow Tone” while Holland stretches out a bit on “In A Sentimental Mood.” Clever arrangements with some wonderful rabbit trails abound, making this a splendid way to spend an evening.
