Trumpeter and composer Charlie Porter leads a lyrical post bop team of Nick Biello/sax-key, Mike Moreno/g, Behn Gillece/vib, Orrin Evans/key, David Wong/b, Damian Erskine/b, Kenneth Salters/dr and various guests through a wide variety of moods. The Hallowed Halls Gospel Choir, for instance brings a reverent mood to the thoughtful “For Ellis” while Jimmie Herrod sings along with some African traditional instruments on the travelogue of “In Short Supply”. Rasheed Jamal brings some artsy rap to Salters’ drum pattern on “Things Fall Apart” and Wong gives a nice bop line on ‘Going Viral.” As for the leader, he forms a strong front line with Biello’s alto on the swinging “Tipping Point”, is richly muted on the dreamy “Hindsight” and lurks with Evans on”Walking The Plank” with some nice guitar musings by Moreno.” Many colors are painted by Porter’s brush.
