David Kikoski with Boris Kozlov: Sure Thing

Gorgeous and lyrical duets between piano and bass are delivered by David Kikoski and Boris Kozlov, respectively here. The thing that always brings me to appreciate duos of any kind is simply that there is no place to hide, you are out there for everyone to see. These two converse like old friends, with elegant forms on “Fugue From ‘The Endless Enigma’” and classy on the glassy “Sure Thing” while even getting a big Monkish on the spry “Winnie’s Garden”. Kozlov does some clever and rich tonings on “Quartet #1” and introduces a “Giant Steps”-ish read into John Coltrane’s “Satellite” while some Satie strains are heard on the spacious “Strength For Change”. A rewarding collaboration.
