A rich sauce of various flavors are produced by Emi Makabe, who sings and plays the Japanese stringed instrument the sahamisen along with a team of Vitor Goncalves/p-acc, Thomas Morgan/b and Kenny Wollesen/dr-vib. The eleven original compositions have her sing in many of them, and with the Asian tones, you get a mix of worlds on the bopping and facile “Treeing” and the breathy harmonies on “Chimney Sweeper” with a rich cadence over the swinging and upbeat “Flash”. The team is bohemian with Goncalves’ accordion with Morgan delivering a rich line on “Mielcke” and relaxed with brushed drums and relaxed spirits on “O Street.” Most upbeat is the kinetic “Rino”, while the closing “Anniversary” features the leader with spartan accompaniment by Morgan in a Joni Mitchell-esque atmosphere. Sort of like an Eastern version of the UK band Pentangle, updated and matured.
