The McKee Brothers: A Time Like This

There’s only one McKee on this album, Denis, who sings, plays bass, keyboards and percussion while teamed up with vocalist Maxayn Lewis, keyboardist Bobby West, bassist Bobby Watson and drummer Steve Stephens along with a horn section of Lee Thronburg-Doug Webb, percussionist Chris Stevens and a handful of cameo guests for an album of bluesy soul’d rock.

With Tim Douthit’s wailing harmonica, the team boogies to “How Can I Miss You Baby” and struts to the hip shaker “The Legend Of Luther Stringfellow” while the team sways to the NO pulse of “Putt Putt Hustler”. McKee and Lewis deliver a duet on the R&B fested “It Is What It Is” and the upbeat “Back To Love”. The horns swamp it up on the gospel drenched “Realize” and have fun with “Don’t Cha Let It Go To Your Head”. The band feels live and in color, at times hinting at early Steely Dan in cleverness and other times like a juke joint jumping collection of jivers.
