Mario Romano: The Journey So Far

A wide variety of moods are celebrated on this album by Mario Romano that collects material from earlier releases. The takeaway here is rich romanticism, and it can be shown as he supports vocalist Jackie Richardson in the sensuous “And If You Please” , the girl next door-ish Kristy teamed with tenor saxist Pat LaBarbera on the lovely “Those Damn I Love Yous” or the nasally sweet Magdo Gianoukas on the upbeat “Dina Dance”. He leads a relaxed post bop quintet on “Non Dienticar” or a Coltranish quartet for “Via Romano” with La Barbera, while William Sperandei’s muted horn bounces on “You’re My Everything.” Roman even takes you to a quiet piazza as he plays solo accordion on “Encanto De Mi Nina”. Impressive Italian flavors.
