This album is subtitled (In Spanish) “Inspired by the open veins of Latin America”, with almost each song beginning with a spoken narration that leads into modern and classical sounds of the Southern Hemisphere. Composed by Gustavo Cortinas, with text by Eduardo Galeano, the music itself mixes traditional sounds of percussion and guitar with jazz instrumentation by Drew Hansen/tp, Artie Black/ts-bcl, Euan Edmonds/tb, Kitt Lyles/b, Matt Gold/g and Gustavo Cortinas/dr-perc. The two discs feature and anthology of sounds ranging from a post bop “ Cumbustibile Humano” to a salsa’d “Los Caudillos Campesinos” with some rocking guitar on “La Mano Invisible”. A rich avalanche of percussion is displayed on the Afro Cuban “El Jinete Y El Caballo” , with clarinetist Victor Goines adding a lilt to “El Desarrolo Desarrolla La Desigualdad”. The wide variety of sounds and moods are like a smorgasbord of atmospheres, with the spoken openings an intimate insight to life a so close yet so far. A musical museum.
