Guitarist Gustav Lundgren teams up with Chris Cheek/ts-ss, Tom Warburton/b and Jorge Rossy/dr-vib for a sublime collection of interpretations from the pen of Jerome Kern. The emphasis is on keeping true to the elegant moods, and it is served well. Chris Cheek handles the soprano sax on a rich read of “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” and pulls out his Paul Robeson mood for “Ol Man River”. His tenor glides with Ludgren on a rich “The Way You Look Tonight” and the team gives a dramatic take f “All The Things You Are”. Rossy, an alumnus from Brad Mehldau’s trio, is in excellent form, guiding through a dainty “I’ve Told Every Star” and coaxing Lundgren through “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man”. Serene sounds.
