Alexander McCabe: I’d Prefer (with George Coleman & Anne McCabe)

Alto saxist Alexander McCabe teams up with vocalist/sister Anne, a solid rhythm team of Paul Odeh/p, Chris Haney/b and Jeff Brown/dr and guest tenor sax titan George Coleman on a solidly swinging set of old school sounding mix of originals and covers. The two saxes show their bona fides on a simmering jam on “Out Front Blues” that sounds like a vintage 50s session, with Coleman glowing with Ms. M on the gentle “Your Laugh” and creating wanderlust moments on “A Christmas Song”. Vocalist Anne is a throwback in delivery, relaxed with the alto saxist on the hiply read “You Really Don’t Care” and simmering around Odeh’s piano ripples on “Miss Maritza”. Alex has a bopper’s heart, and his rich tone is filled with confidence and caffeine, as on the sleek “I’d Prefer” and lightly pulsed “New York City”. Timeless tunes.
