Gayelynn McKinney and McKinney Zone: Zoot Suit Funk

What makes this album by drummer Gayelynn McKinney so interesting and alluring is that the leader never steps out in front; rather, she gives chorus like vocals with Trenita Womack, does solo but still in the background, with Womack hitting  a mean tambourine or conga for support. The team of Demetrius Nabors/p, Alex Anest/g, Ibrahim Jones/b and  Rafael Statin/ts supply the juice for soulful toe tappers like “Stylin”, the fusiony “Space Goddess” and Tower of Power-inspired “Having Fun.” The band gives a Headhunters feel to “Just A Little Bass and Drums” with Statin on bass clarinet, and the guitars get wacka-wooka’d on the title track. Where is Don Cornelius to introduce this album?
