Pianist Nicki Adams creates rich duets with brother and trumpeter Patrick on this rich and communicative collection of modern jazz readings. Their taste in song selection is as good as their delivery, with Nicki going full stride on an energetic take of Joe Henderson’s “Shade of Jade” while Patrick leans over the horizon. The two create sharp angles on the Miles Davis classic “ESP’ and have fun on the roller coaster ride of John Coltrane’s “26-2”. Patrick’s brass is polished and bright as he dances to Thelonious Monk’s “Pannonica” while sleek on Charlie Parker’s “Cool Blues”. The two communicate, anticipate and relate as only long termed relations are able to, knowing where the other is going, and finishing one’s sentences. This is family values at its most musical.
