IN SEARCH OF THE LOST NOTE…Martin Kuchen: Det Forsvunnas Namn, Sebastian Strinning/Julian Kirshner: Dipping The Eye

“Somewhere there’s music,

how faint the tune…”

Martin Kuchen plays alto and baritone saxophones, using speakers and even his ipod for a collection of sounds that are loosely termed “songs”. Ideas range from eerie electronic stagnation in “I” to scratches on “The 5th of December 1931 02:00 am” and Hippopotami Mit Mensch”  with saxophone pads creating a cadence on the puffy “Sheer Life Asleep”. Buzzing of fleas is created on “Unexit Here” and sound effects are thrown around masquerading as melodies on “Lilla Atem Choir”. How much did his parents pay for sax lessons?

Sebastien Strinning plays tenor sax and bass clarinet, or should I say, blows into a tenor sax and bass clarinet along with drummer and percussionist Julian Kirshner. There’s actually an almost identifiable melody on the free bopper “An Anchormna’s Dwelling Place”, but besides that you get an exercise in subtones on “Sternpicker” and  the puffy “High/Dry”, a lesson in screeching during ”Chockablock” and enough squeaks to make you grab for some WD40 on “Oakum”. Is this the legacy of John Coltrane?
