Vocalist Samantha Carlson joins the pantheon of interpreters of the Great American Songbook with an impressive outing with Phillip Burkhead/p, Bill Jackson/b, Dan Dorff/dr and William Brian Hogg/ts-ss. She’s got a bright Broadway style of delivery, throwing in a strong vibrato every now and then. Material like “Embraceable You” and the title track give hints of Jane Monheit with a confidence, clarity and heart on sleeve emotion. An eagerness pervades the Caribbean inflected “Sway,” which includes some nice soprano work by Hogg. The trio plays around with a Monk-isized reading of “The Man I Love,” and Carlson handles the hairpin turns with ease. A luminous “Song of Raintree County” has the spotlight on just her and Burkhead, and she handles the intimacy well. Impressive outing!
