Well, you won’t get musically cheated on this one-you get 20, count ‘em, 20 songs by keyboardist/composer Tobin Mueller and his regular team of Woody Mankowski/voc-ss, Doug Schneider/ts, Tom Washatka/ts, Bob Levy/tp, Ken Schaphorst/fh, Dane Richeson/dr, Jeff Cox/b, Chris Mueller/p as well as guests Ron Carter/b Bill Barner/cl, Martyn Kember-Smith/fi and Emily Rohm/voc. The songs have more moods than a kaleidoscope has colors, with each turn taking you to different view. Mueller’s humming Hammond B3 serves up a slow and funky “Cliff’s Edge” with some muscular soloing by Schneider and Mankowski” while romantic overtures are coaxed on “A Promise”. Carter’s bass lays down a hip line on the bopping “Frankenfanny” while you get tribal percussion and moods supporting Barner’s licorice stick “Caught in the Current”. Levy’s trumpet and Schaphorst’s flugelhorn fire more rapidly than an AK 47 on the rapid repeater “Lightning Strikes” while a gospel pulse takes you to the pulpit as Mueller preaches it on “Must Go Back”. This album has more wide ranging moods than a teenage female softball team during their cycles!
