William Chernoff: Aim To Stay

Leader William Chernoff trades off between electric and acoustic bass on this lyrically swinging album with Chet Baker inspired trumpeter Thad Bailey-Mai, pianist Johnny Tobin, and drummer Carson Tworow for the electric tracks and Bobby Wiens for the upright ones. There’s a single trio tune, “Ulla”, which finds Tobin in a rich parlor mood, as well as on the intro to “Nomads” with the leader, going into an easy swinging of “Nomads” with Bailey-Mai’s warm brass. The team is pastoral on the gentle and Cumberland Gap-folksy “Aim To Stay” while the leader gets bluesy and hip on the Sanford and Son-ish “Make Elkino” and the thick blues of “Being Blue” with some gritty horn work to add to the atmosphere. West Coast Warm.
