His soprano delivers a clarion call on the ruminating “Ethereal” and thoughtfully rides the ripples of rhythm on “New Years Day”. Penman and Penn lead Manricks on bass clarinet through a thick trudge on “Day To Day” while nudging him along on alto sax on the peppy “Formula One”. The team shows how to boogaloo a backbeat on “Schmaltza” with Penn’s high hat percolating on the nimble “Common Tone” Wondrous melancholic moods are created on the deep title track, with Penman’s bass guiding through the palpable mist.
