Norwegian saxist Marius Nest teams with the DR Big Band for some exciting charts that mix post bop jazz as well as R&B and rock moods on this recent release. There is a two part “Bicycle Town” that has Nest tonguing out the beats on the intros with puffy tones, leading to a clever Latin pulse on the first part, and a grooving bluesy rocker on the latter. A three part “Children’s Day” has Nest honking with some rock guitar support, while going subtone on the second part and festive with tones of percussion on the closing section. On soprano, Nest gives some Middle Eastern and Klezmer tones on the serene and supple “ Farewell” while floats warmly over the piano and drums of “Tribute”. Exciting sounds. Any chance of a US tour?
