Mark Murphy: Hiding Place

Relaxed and understated moods are painted by Mark Murphy, as he creates landscapes with Jon Cowherd/p-key, Jeff Ballard/dr, Gilad Hekselman/g, Dayna Stephens/saxes and Alexa Barchini/voc. Murphy comes across like a modern read of Kenny Rankin, reassuring with Stephens’ breathy tenor on the gentle title tune, and bluesy as he interprets lyrics to Paul McCartney’s cozy “Junk”. He stays in a Beatles mood on a mellow “Two Of Us” with Cowherd adding a saloon feel to the ivories, while synthy strings are added to a dreamy 70s pop feeling of The  Police’s “Tea In The Sahara”. A bit out of character, but still intriguing, is the Eno-ish synthy percussion melded into “3420” while Hekselman adds rich thoughts to Neil Young’s “Harvest”. Mellow soul.
