Both bassist Mark Egan and drummer Danny Gottlieb have supplied the pulse to fusion giants ranging from guitarists Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Pat Martin and Larry Coryell to big bands such as Gil Evans. This duet at times sounds as big band as they can get, with rich layers melding with lyricism to make even the simplest theme the richest thick tapestry.
The gents sound Weather Reportish as Egan’s synthy bass carves a path on “Cabarete” while he creates droplets like a stalactite cave on the sinewy “Electric Road”. Gottlieb’s sticks provide a framework for the gurgling “Blue Sound Bath” and his high hat chimes over Egan’s meditative bass chants on “Offering”. Rich melodies rumble along the pulsating caravan of “Back and Forth” and a resonant vibrato lunges over Gottlieb’s rattlesnake of a sizzle on “Come What May”. Fusion without confusion.
