The Ben Rosenblum Trio: Portrait of An Artist-The Music of Gregg Hill

Classy and classic trio work is delivered by the Wynton Kelly-inspired piano of Ben Rosenblum along with drummer Ben Zweig and bassist Marty Jaffe on a collection of Gregg Hill compositions during a 2009 gig in swinging East Lansing, Michigan. While the recording is a tad distant in quality, the music is right up front, upbeat and swinging on “Fan-O-Gram” with Rosenblum full fisted as he flies over Zweig’s snappy sticks on “First Impulse/Finders Keepers”. Jaffe’s bowed bass mourns through “Portrait Of The Artist” and Zweig rides the whip as he drives the team like pack mules on the McCoy Tyner tuned “Modal Yodel.” Romantic moods show the full range of the team on “New Sunday” and lyrical “Thank You Notes”. A nice night out with Mid-West values that swing.
