Cuban pianist Kemuel Roig celebrates his faith, family and life in America with a collection of originals and jazz covers as he teams his core unit of Lowell Ringel/b, Hilario Bell/dr and Jose Aguilara/perc with a mix and match group of guests. Trumpeter Randy Brecker reflects with Roig on a pretty “Conversation” and all star tenor Chris Potter sizzles over a dark roast of Joe Henderson’s “Inner Urge”. Roig himself shows a rich mix of piano and keyboards as he creates a rich atmosphere on “Midnight Impromptu” and is suave as he saunters on “Café Con Leche” . His musical re-creation of the famed Bible story of Joseph (of the technicolor coat fame, in case you missed that week in Sunday School) is a gorgeous synthesis of organic and electric, while the contemplative “ The Prayer” has Joel Hernandez passionately pleading. A hug with his son Kendrick displays his intimate family priorities while “Pare Cocher” gives a tip to his Afro-Cuban roots. An appreciation of all of God’s important gifts.
