Even the album cover of drummer Eric Binder’s latest release shows his allegiance to the vintage sounds of Blue Note, with the classic photo, color and lines looking a lot like something from the mind of Reid Miles. He brings together tenor all star Walter Smith III and bassist Petros Kiampanis for some kinetic trio work. Smith is gloriously languid as he walks along “Trane Ride” and is peppy with Binder doing some nimble stick work on “Blue Jawn”. Kiampanis lopes along and cuts though Smith’s thick fog on “Luna” and the team floats like a nimbus cloud on the gasping sighs of “To Be Alone”. Smith and Binder drift on “Metallic Sky” and the team take a nice trip into the blues on the fun and jivey “BFTF.” Toe tapping travels.
