Peter Hess Quartet: Present Company

Tenor saxist Peter Hess forms a front line with trombonist Brian Drye in a pianoless quartet with drummer Adam Hopkins and drummer Tomas Fujiwara for a collection of band-composed themes. The horns create long tones over Hopkins’ bass on the misty “When To Move” with the horns bopping on “Ring Tone”. Drye’s trombone  plunges like an Olympic diver as drums and bass create a New Orleans street feel on “Echolocation” and Hess leads the charge on the deeply dug “Komma”. The leader has a rich and warm tone, never overblowing and filling the room as on the bluesy “Sanford Theme”. Post bop contemplations.
