Event Horizon: Jazz Concert

A mix of post bop and CTI-inspired soul is delivered by the quartet of drummer Rick Vitek, bassits Donn DeSanto, Scott Mertens on piano or keyboards and Jim Kaczmarek playing a variety of reeds and flutes. The band has an ESP-ish feel with Kaczmarek on the soprano sax on the flowing “Chelsea Playbroud”, with his tenor producing a Sonny Rollins gruffness on the calypso’d “We Would Love To Have You”. Vitek hits hard as he snaps the team with Mertens’ piano on “Black Samba” while he produces a funky feel with Mertens on keyboards for “Strut” and the soulful “Escher Drive”. A warm tenor on the rich “ Guess Not” and “Dark Waltz” (with a nice bass feature for De Santo) show some nice musice, whil his flute on the  driving “Great, There Is No Love” has a hip feel through and through. Cooking and cohesive.
