Ricardo Grilli: 1962

San Paulo born and NYC bred guitarist Ricardo Grilli releases his third album with the stellar talent of Kevein Hays/p, Joe Martin/b, Erick Harland/dr and tenor saxist Mark Turner. The moods are as deep and blue as the cover, with Turner’s breathy tone and Grilli’s tensile and echoey tone melding well on “Mars” and streamlined “Virgo”. Grilli does some pedal pushing to create some thick atmospheres on “1954-1962” , while Martin supplies a rich subcurrent on “Lunatico”. Fluid interplay and Hays’ fingers are highlighted on the tribute to Wayne Shorter’s “ESP” on a flick of the wristed “ERP” while the team creates rich indigo’d hues on the leader’s contemporary ax man on “Signs (Blues For Peter Bernstein)”. Grillic is developing his own personal sound and style, with a texture to each string that gets thick and warm each season.
