Orrin Evans and the Captain Black Big B and: The Intangible Between

Remember concerts?
Pianist, leader, composer and arranger Orrin Evans leads his big band at a “live” recording at NYC’s Sear Sound Studio C with an enthusiastic mix of originals and jazz standards. Titles and themes proclaim messages both secular and spiritual here, with the Sunday School special “This Little Light Of Mine’ going on a wild ride with some exuberant solos by Evans, drummer Jason Brown and saxist Troy Roberts and with trumpeter Sean Jones. The brass section sways to Thelonious Monk’s “Off Minor” and the reeds are glowing with warmth on Johnny Mandel’s “A Time For Love” while Andrew Hill’s tricky “Tough Love” is a wild white knuckler that includes a spoken message by Evans as well as support by The Village voices. The sections cascade in support of Jones and tenor saxist Stacy Dillard on Roy Hargrove’s rich and undulating “Into Dawn” and the team closes out with Evans directing traffic as the band all sings together on a tune that matches your ears in reaction to the album, “I’m So Glad I Got To Know You”. This one’s a true joy.
