This is about the 3rd or 4th album I’ve heard by saxist Julio Botti, and each one has been impressive in its own right. This time around he keeps the music in tiny settings of duets, trios and occasional quartets on this lovely mix of lilting Latin romances. His sweet soprano does an intricate dance with Leonardo Pedrozo Avila/b, Gustavo Gancedo/g and Matias Lanfranco/p on “Taquito Militar” while going bohemia with Valeria Martin/vi and Alejandro Colombatti/band on “Nostalgias” longing with Lanvranco, Avila and percussionist Quintino Cinalli on his own “Recordando”. On tenor he creates a romantic mood on a breathy “Cuando Llueve” and is sensuous with vocalist Maria Jose Rojas on “Cualquiera De Estas Noches” and the intimate “El Ultmo Café’.” Each of these settings is filled with rich moments, but the duet with Lanfranco on the closing “Nunca Tuvo Novio” is a dance that makes you with for an entire album of the same. This guy lights a candle that glows and flickers.
