Modern sonatas are created by the duet of bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck and pianist Wayne Horvitz, who also adds a dash of electronics here and there on these 17 intuitive originals. The pair trade off taking the lead in songs, with Horvitz out in front on the impressionistic and abstract “Long Wind” and strong “We Will Be Silk” while he slips into the background for Schoenbeck’s warm double reed on the reflective “Twining” and “Undecided”. The two prance in unison on “Tin Palace” and “Laughter” with some extra electronics by Horvitz to team with Schoenbeck’s subtones. Parlor parlays.
