Jan Hammer, who’s made a successful musical career ranging from Mahavishnu Orchestra and Jeff Beck to Miami Vice, splits the difference as he plays all the instruments on this collection of short, sweet, but swinging themes.
He hits just about every genre that he’s been associated with, with some nice piano and bass on relaxed blues tunes like “Deep Pool”, a nocturne of a piano solo for “Blue 3” and a Coltrane-ish tenor sounding solo during “Mood 2”. The other side of the musical rainbow includes romantic synth and keys on “Solitude”, poppish R&B during an electronically pulsed “Later On” and “Layer Cake” and a deep groove with a Middle Eastern flavor on “Magic Theatre”. The tunes clock in between under two minutes to just over three, so there is only room for short solos, but the thing here is the mood; maybe a collection of ideas for a new Netflix series?
