Ian Carey: Fire In My Head-The Anxiety Suite

A five piece “Anxiety Suite” is composed and delivered by trumpeter Ian Carey and his simpatico tean of Kasey Knudsen/as, Sheldon Brown/bcl, Jon Arkin/dr, Adam Shulman/p-key and Fred Randolph/b. The team displays a warm atmosphere, with even the band photograph warning us that “musicians in image are more anxious than they appear”. The music itself if more reflective than forewarned, with the rhythm team providing a gentle cadence for Carey’s warm horn on “Signs & Symptoms” and going into a laconic mood for Brown’s deep reed on “Internal Exile”. The band is most assertive with Carey and Shulman’s  piano delivering heat on “This Is Fine” while going into a more bluesy mood when Shulman switches to his Rhodes on the warm “Thought Spirals”. Randolph’s bass work is hand in glove with Shulman on the soulful CTI vibe of “Resistance” and with all of the rewarding sounds and harmonies, you might think that even on a bad day, Carey’s grey matter is in a good milieu.
