****RINGER OF THE WEEK****Chip Wickham: Blue To Red

This album led by flutist Chip Wickham is a throwback to the vintage days of Impulse!, when you had advanced and forwardly thinking jazz that was both accessible and exciting. He brings together a team of keyboardist Dan Goldman, bassist/cellist Simon Houghton, Jon Scott on drums, percussionist Rick Weedon, but best of all, harpist Amanda Whiting who throws in these sweeping moments reminiscent of the best of Alice Coltrane or Michael White.

The dramatic flowing strings flow over the cadence and rich textures of the dreamy title track, while Goldman’s keys cut a soulful groove on the bopping “Route One”. Wickham’s flute is rich and floats like cirrus clouds over the spacey and modal “Interstellar” with luminous and ethereal atmospheres following Houghton’s bass line during “The Cosmos”. His vibrato is palpable during the lovely sunset tribute “Mighty Yusef” with the team sizzling in a Latin move to Weedon’s percussion on the Weather Reportish “Double Cross”. The sparks fly, the sky opens, the ground rumbles and the ears have a feast. Dig in!!!
