Rachel Therrien plays trumpet and flugelhorn in a mix of modern tones along with a tinge of tribute to classic muscular horn players like Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan. This album has here leading a team of pianist Daniel Gasson, bassist Dario Guibert and drummer Mareike Wiening for twelve tunes ranging from quick ideas to full and drawn out concepts. She shows bold chops over Wiening’s cadence on the flowing “V For Vena” and sears over Guibert’s line over the Latin heavy hitter “Pigalle”. Her horn can oso be luminous as on the nocturne with Gassin on “Assata” and she ruminates with contemplation on “Migration”. The team gets quirky as piano strings are pulled on “Bleu Tortue” and they make dots and dashes during “Synchronicity”. A wide swath of post bop tones.
