If blues rocking is your thing, this dvd/blu ray documentary on ZZ Top is sure to be one of your guilty pleasures. The threesome of Billy F Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard chat with riveting honesty and down home charm on their career ups and downs, starting with their 70s hits like “La Grange”, all the way through the MTV years an dup to the present with fun interviews with the likes of Billy Bob Thornton and Joshua Homme. The vintage home films include ZZ Top’s gig at Gruene Hall as well as snippets from shows like Johnny Carson.
Their initial purpose is stated as to “take Texas culture to the world” but the best summary of the band is that they are like “Seeing Bugs Bunny in Person” as the three seem to never take themselves too seriously while seriously serving up a blue plate special of the rib sticking boogie rock. The vibe of the film is as festive as a night out seeing the threesome, and it will make you glad that you ever latched on to these three gents. Performances include a sizzling take of “Brown Sugar”, “Tush” and “Thunderbird” as well as the classic dynamic onslaught of “La Grange”. Need any other excuse?
