Seth Weaver sings in a relaxed and hip manner and plays his trombone in a similarly swinging vein as he leads his 17 piece jazz orchestra through a mix of his own tunes and standards. Weaver is suave and supple along with Addison Frie’s piano on an enticing “Here’s That Rainy Day” while the other Van Heusen/Burke tune, “It Could Happen To You” features a swaggering two tenor battle between Sam Dillon and Lukas Gabric. Weaver mixes his crooning and warm trombone on a sleek take of “On A Clear Day” while he flows over the reeds on his own “The Hudson”. The team gets into a bit of a modal mood as Dillon rides the Coltrane with Weaver on the driving “Frost” propelled by Nolan Byrd’s drums” while the team gets into a Basie-swing vibe with Marty Kenny’s bass and Dodd’s rich alto on “Red”. A welcome mix of toe tapping, classy singing and exciting solos. Would like to see these guys hit LA.
