Jure Pukl: Broken Circles

Best known for his Stan Getz-toned tenor sax, Jure Pukl brings along his soprano sax, bass clarinet and adds a bit of Coltranesque muscle to his tone as he leads a team of Charles Altura/t, Joel Ross/vib, Matt Brewer/b and Kweku Sumbra/dr-kal on this collection of (mostly) originals. His more assertive and ascerbic tone is felt on the pulsating “Sustaned Optimism” and works just as well on the more soft “Broken Circles” and cute lullaby with voices on “Kids”. His bass clarinet teams with Ross for a richly desultory “Gloomy Sunday” while his soprano glides with Altura for “Sky Is The Limit” and sails along the African kalimba on the exotic “Compassion” guided along by Brewer’s bass. The rhythm team is in sync for th e post bopper “Triumph of Society” and caresses the melody for the  lyrical “Separation”. Impressive directions and musical musings.
