Sounds fresh out of a highway juke joint are delivered by Chickenbone Slim, who sings with gravelly grit and plays guitar along with a blues-rocking team of Scot Smart/g, Troy Sandow/harp, Andrew/b and Marty Dodson/dr. The guitars have a tensile twang to them, and it works well over the shuffling grooves on pieces like the boogie pulse of “Vampire Baby” and swinging “Strolling with Chickenbone”. Sandow’s harp howls on the two stepping and chunky “The Ballad of Dick” and the Chuck Berry-inspired “Ride” and the rhythm team boogaloos with some hard hitting by Dodson on “Dignity” with Crane laying down a hip line on “Little Victory”. A rich tale is told on the acoustic “Helpless” with Slim sounding like a well travelled hitchhiker, and the team gets into a deep blue for “My Bad Luck”. Is there a two drink minimum for this album?
