Ross McHenry: Nothing Remains Unchanged

Bassist Ross McHenry teams with drummer Eric Harland, pianist Matthew Sheens and tenor saxist Ben Wendel (for the most part) on these intuitive post bop originals. There are a few trio settings, with the leader giving some nice solo work on the mellow “Woods” and burning warm embers on “This I Give To You”. Wendel is declaratory over Sheens’ ripples during “Processional” and gives bold dynamics with Harland and McHenry digging deep on the fast paced “Perspectives”. The melodic “Forest Dance” has some interesting undercurrents supplied by Harland, and the rhythm team is warm for Wendel’s glowing aria on “1 East West”. Modern musings done well.
