Roscoe Mitchell with Ostraviska Banda: Performing Distant Radio Transmission

Compositions by the legendary Roscoe Mitchell are interpreted and performed in both orchestra and woodwind quintet settings on album that leans toward modern classical tones. The “Distant Radio Transmission” was recorded from one of Mitchell’s improvisations, with the large orchestra including a solo by percussionist Chris Nappi alongside swirling strings and woodwinds. The piece veers between background tones and almost ambience with sounds floating in and out like characters in an Agatha Christie novel. The Nonaah Trio of Dana Reason/p, John C Savage/fl and Cahterine Lee D. Mus: oboe produce a Mitchell composition that is a free floating chamber affair. “Cutouts” is a woodwind quintet  piece by Roberta Michel/fl, Christa Robinson/ob, Carlos Corddeio/cl, Sara Scjoenbeck/bassoon and JohN Gattis/frh that features bold French Horn harmonics and reedy atmospheres. Pianist Joseph Kubera goes solo on a collection of compositions that range from scrambling ivories  to boogie woogie stride. Intuitive explorations both grandiose and intimate.
