Hayoung Lyou: Metamorphosis

Pianist and composer Hayoung Lyou teams up with a double reed front line of Jasper Dutz/as-cls and Jacob Shulman/ts along with a rhythm team of Simon Willson/b and Dayeou Seok/dr on this mix of impressionism and expressionistic post bop material. Dutz’s bass clarinet broods gorgeously over Lyou’s fingers on “Reason” while his alto gives a noirish sepia mood on “Busan”. The horns converse back and forth on the dark title track, with the reeds melding wonderfully for the gentle “Demian”. Lyou’s touch is ethereal for guest vocalist Wonmi Jung’s poetic delivery of “Heaven” with the entire team stepping away for the pianist to give a glowing nocturne of “Solitude”. A pretty trio of “A Sunny Day at Yankee Stadium” shows the spartan format working well. Which one will show up for an LA gig? I’m ready!
