Jose’ James has created a catalogue so far of tributes to the likes of Bill Withers and Billie Holiday. This time around, he gets into a soul mood somewhere between these two, going from bohemia to 50s and back on this album with a rotating guest list of supporters. A poppish “You Know What It Do” one minutes leads to a funky keyboard of “Feels So Good” while Laura Mvula and Kris Bowers join in for a gospel clapping “Nobody Knows My Name”. He’s dressed in stark blue as he teams with Lizz Wright on an earthy “Take Me Home” and gives some funky R&B vintage on “Oracle”. James also seems comfortable in a folk mood, sounding convincing on ”Miss Me When I’m Gone” and “Saint James”. His voice is so smooth and alluring that it works in every milieu, which leaves one to wonder which is in his dna.
