When push comes to shove, there are fewer things better in jazz than two tenors locking horns, whether in fast bopping swingers, or, as here, in mellow madness. Keith Oxman plays a tenor with warm embers, while veteran Houston Person spews dark volcanic fire on this album with a simpatico team of pianist Jeff Jenkins, bassist Ken Walker and drummer Paul Romaine. The focus is on easy swing, relaxed as on a porch, oozing charm on “I’ve Never Been In Love Before” and the two dig a deep groove on as they blow rings on “Two Cigarettes In The Dark”. A take of Johnny Griffin’s “Sweet Sucker” revs up a bit with some swagger, and Hank Mobley’s “Bossa For Baby” is palpably delectable. Annette Murrell is charming on the earthy soul of “Everything Happens to Me” and a languid “Crazy He Calls Me”. Oxman goes it alone and dances in the dark with Jenkins on a suave “Murrellancholy” that oozes with shadows, making this a tenor-remendous outing.
