Third Sound: Heard In Havana

Directed by  composer Patrick Castillo, the Third Sound consists of a mix of woodwinds by Sooyun Kim/fl, Romie de Guise-Langlois/cl, strings by Karen Kim/vi and Michael Nicolas and pianist Orion Weiss, tackling modern classical material that is filled with grey and black hues. A four part “Details on the Strasbourg Rosace” melds electronic sounding tones with piano effects and ominous woodwinds contrasted with pizzicato’d directions. Piano droplets join with clarinet on the delicate “Fantasy-Quartet” with noirish strings fit for a RKO B-movie on “Immutable Dreams: II” and “Mieko”. Crickets in the field chirp to the dissonant musings of “Radians  Phase” while wisping flute contrasts with slashing strings for “Inexpressible”. Most alluring is the rich violins on the chamber’d “Wave: I” and the dramatic “Smash”. Modern colors.
